Dear Child Care Connections,

Being a childcare provider and a parent I try to be aware as much as possible about safety issues in the home.  If you could please note these two everyday hazards in your next issue of Parent Resource Guide.  Stress provider’s to make parents aware of these issues.  It would be greatly appreciated.

I still cannot believe that parent’s have Vaseline and baby oil in diaper bag’s that their children are permitted to play in.  This is a serious concern of mine due to the death of the child that swallowed the baby oil and died because there is nothing medically they can do correct the coating of the child’s lungs.  Parents do not realize letting their children play with the tubes or bottles can be deadly.

Also, on door stops that are located long the floor boards of your homes; “The little bars or springs keeping the door from hitting the walls” are small little rubber ends that can easily be pulled off by a small child and end up in their mouths.  This is a serious choking hazard that may not be thought of.

I hope this information can be helpful to providers as well as parents.

               Sincerely,

               Alexis Lasher
